Concrete Services Across Chester County, PA

Chester County stretches from the Main Line suburbs in the east to farmland along the Lancaster County line and the Maryland border in the south. Here's what to know about concrete work across the county, and where to find information for your town.

73 municipalities, 73 sets of rules

Chester County is made up of 73 municipalities — one city (Coatesville), boroughs and townships. Many well-known place names, such as Exton, Paoli, Berwyn and Chester Springs, are communities rather than municipalities, and ZIP codes regularly cross municipal lines. Permits, sidewalk ordinances and stormwater rules come from the municipality where your property sits.

Weather and freeze-thaw

Southeastern Pennsylvania sees repeated freezing and thawing through the winter, and roads are heavily salted. Water that soaks into concrete and freezes can cause scaling and cracking. Air-entrained mixes, proper curing, good drainage and avoiding rock salt — especially in a slab's first winter — help exterior concrete last.

Ground conditions vary

The Chester Valley, running roughly along the Route 202 / Route 30 corridor through Malvern and Exton, is underlain by limestone and dolomite, where sinkholes can form if water is concentrated. Other parts of the county have clay-rich soils that hold water. Either way, a well-compacted stone base and sound drainage are the foundation of a lasting slab.

Before you dig

Pennsylvania law requires a PA One Call (811) request before excavation. Where a driveway meets a state-maintained road, a PennDOT Highway Occupancy Permit may also be needed.
